About Character Count

A fast, free tool for counting characters and words, and for fitting your text to any limit.

What it does

Character Count is a simple tool for anyone who writes text that needs to fit inside a limit. Paste your text into the box on the home page and you instantly get a character count, a word count, a sentence count, a paragraph count, and an estimated reading time. Nothing needs to be uploaded or submitted first. The count updates as you type.

Make it fit

Most character counters stop at counting. Character Count goes further with a character count AI feature called Make it fit. Enter a target character count and the tool will shorten or expand your text to match it, while trying to keep your meaning, tone, and voice intact.

If your text is longer than the target, the tool trims it down, removing filler and repetition first. If your text is shorter than the target, the tool expands it with relevant detail that fits naturally, without inventing facts or changing your point of view. This part of the tool uses an AI model to do the actual rewriting. You can read exactly how that works, and what happens to your text, on the Privacy Policy page.

Platform limits

Alongside the character count, the tool shows how your text measures up against common platform limits, including X, Instagram, Instagram bios, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Threads. Each one shows a live count and a check mark or a cross, so you know at a glance whether your text fits before you copy and paste it somewhere else.

Why it exists

There are a lot of character counters online already, but most of them are built only for social media managers, or they are cluttered with ads and popups that get in the way of a task that should take five seconds. Character Count was built to be useful for anyone: students checking an essay word count, writers trimming a bio, marketers fitting a headline, or anyone else who just needs an accurate count and a clean interface.

Who built this

Character Count is an independently built tool. If you have feedback, found a bug, or want to suggest a feature, the Contact page has a way to reach out.
